Alliances

ASP – An “Alliance of Sustainability Partnerships”?

ASP is evolving to address the urgent sustainability issues. We face unprecedented, complex, global challenges that will need new thinking and approaches if we are to meet them within a relatively short period of time – 30 years, one generation.  Our response is to reach out to engage and partner with others in an Alliance of Sustainability Partnerships.  ASP has always been about connecting, challenging and supporting individuals (Associates and Members) and we will continue to do that. Now, additionally, we are developing relationships at the organisational level as well. Standing together to learn how to move from unsustainable to sustainable practices in all aspects of life on earth – connected, supportive, having positive impacts on the global challenges.

Context: The Global Challenge and milestones

We frame our work with the following challenges and necessary outcomes for mankind:

  1. 2020/21 discover how to co-exist with covid-19
  2. 2030 achieve all the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals
  3. 2030 50% reduction in carbon emissions
  4. 2040 another 50% reduction in carbon emissions
  5. 2050 create a way of living for 10 billion people ensuring peace, harmony and equity for all

These challenges are encapsulated by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Our new initiative falls within one SDG in particular… No. 17:

sustainability1
Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development“.

01

Sustainability is the outcomes of conscious thinking

02

Simply put, sustainability means having…

“Enough, for everyone, forever”

03

Simple “solutions” won’t work.

We need to strive for actions and solutions that embody simplicity the other side of complexity

04

There are no given, proven solutions. We need to co-create them

05

We need new systems that are designed to be sustainable rather than those that tinker with, or are co-dependent upon, systems that are fundamentally unsustainable

Our Principles that Guide this Work

Introducing IGNITE
Intended to start a social justice fire, our programme of training, knowledge exchange and networking, delivered in partnership by Consort Strategy and the Institute of Association Leadership, is designed to equip organisations with the expertise for supporting delivery of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

ASP is teaming with IAL on its IGNITE initiative

Gwyn Jones and Mike Zeidler have joined IAL’s Global Policy Think Tank to progress the role of associations in driving social change, and to engage in how ASP as an “association” can learn from similar organisations how to be more effective and create more value for our members.  We, ASP Directors and Members, are also  contributing to their Masterclasses and podcasts. (See “LEARN MORE“)

Why sustainability and social enterprise are important for Associations:

Jill Poet CEO and Founder of Organisation for Responsible Businesses

 “your businesses are going to be more successfully, more sustainable, even more profitable, if you embed some aspect of social change”

Gwyn Jones, Director at ASP

“Our children expect us to leave the planet in a better condition than we found it…  I want the world to be better because I’ve been on it”

Description: Our next instalment in the IGNITE Masterclass Programme will be delivered by Jill Poet, CEO, Organisation for Responsible Businesses CIC.

www.orbuk.org.uk

In this talk, Jill will focus on how SMEs could be the driving force for social good. Controversially, although a committed social entrepreneur herself, Jill will question the status quo of the Social Enterprise movement, which, she says, is politically sexy but in danger of becoming counterproductive.

Taking the grassroots, pragmatic approach that she is well known for, Jill will explain why she believes SMEs could be the driving force for social good, far more so than Social Enterprise and big corporates, and what needs to happen to ignite the power of the small business community to drive the responsible business movement forward.

GEM

Global Environment Media

GEM is creating “GEM-TV.com”, a 24/7 live linear experience along with hundreds of Video on Demand “solution-oriented” videos covering nine key environmental Topics: Energy, Climate Change, People on Earth, Forests, The Ocean, Biodiversity, Food, Sustainable Living and Water.

It will also include an education section rich with infographics, a library of academic papers, and a portal to courses around the globe dedicated to the environment, and a special learning section for kids.

GEM uses “good news” to inspire action that transforms our relationship with the planet so our children will live in harmony, safety and balance with ourselves and nature.

GEM creates the first-of-its-kind digital media network dedicated to positive environmental solutions

Experts from the environmental, entertainment and government sectors join forces with NGOs, foundations, and universities to create an enhanced media platform and digital community for the planet

Nonprofit, civic and corporate leaders from around the world have come together to launch Global Environment Media (GEM), a content platform designed to better the planet by educating, engaging, and empowering audiences with compelling programming and data-rich information. GEM will utilize the power of positive narrative and science-based materials to tell stories of progress and innovation about our planet and those who inhabit it.

Seeing the need for positive solutions that address the current environmental crises, the founding team joined forces to build a media company with the support of the non-profit organization, GEMA, that together will lead current and future generations to a healthier, more sustainable planet. Hailing from government and broadcast production to marketing and social strategy,  the founders share a vision to curate, produce and distribute inspiring environmental stories with positive solutions.

Christian Moore the Managing Partner of GEM and president of the foundation Global Environment Movement Association (GEMA)

“There is nothing more majestic and powerful than planet Earth. GEM embodies that mindset that people must fall in love with the natural world first in order to then be engaged and excited enough to save it. This was why we launched GEM as the first-of-its kind media network. We will combine fascinating content with reliable environmental information from trusted sources that are tackling the challenges we face.”

Roger Vincent the Managing Partner GEM and treasurer of GEMA

“We believe in positivity and wanted to create a destination where people can explore stories of innovators who are impacting and shaping the world, as well as those working on a local level to impact their own community. We know that governments can only go so far and together, individuals, businesses and NGOs, can take action and catalyze the change needed to heal our planet.”

Other co-founders and their executive team roles include:

  • Dennis Kucinich, the Advisory Board Co-Chairman who has been a leading environmental policy champion and former U.S. Congressman from Ohio;
  • Michael Clemente, the Senior Executive Producer who led programming at ABC News, CNN, and Fox News;
  • Elizabeth Kucinich, the Executive Director for Global Partnerships, a professor, documentary filmmaker and environmental advocate;
  • Marc Scarpa, Product Development & Growth Hacker who specializes in live participatory media;
  • Doug Scott is Marketing Advisor and a renowned branded entertainment pioneer.

GEM-TV.com will offer viewers a 24/7 live linear experience along with hundreds of Video on Demand “solution-oriented” videos covering nine key environmental Topics: Energy, Climate Change, People on Earth, Forests, The Ocean, Biodiversity, Food, Sustainable Living and Water.

In one interface, GEM-TV.com will combine media and education.  The first broadcast network dedicated to providing a platform for environmental solutions, GEM will be divided into four sections:

1) Live TV,

2) Topics – an expansive VOD library,

3) Research – an education section rich with infographics, a library of academic papers, and a portal to courses around the globe dedicated to the environment, and

4) Kids – a special learning section for kids.

With its powerful mission, GEM has already partnered with 50 institutions, foundations, NGOs, producers, and other organizations, including the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Conservation International, Earth Day Network, Freeland, Ocean Cleanup, and Global Resource Information Database (GRID) Geneva, among others. GEM is working towards a partnership agreement with the UN Environment Programme. The TV/VOD solutions company Mobibase was in charge of the technical integration of GEM.
