A 90-minute workshop with Danu Poyner, founder of Grokkist.

There’s work that brings you alive — the thing you do with a fluency you can’t fully account for, where your tacit knowledge and hard-won practical wisdom simply move through you. You know it matters. People feel it when they’re near it. The trouble isn’t believing in the work. It’s that a living hasn’t formed around it, and you’re starting to wonder whether one ever will without you becoming someone you don’t want to be. Why can’t I catch a break?

You’ve watched the advice roll in. Build a personal brand. Find your niche. Sell, sell, sell. And something in you refuses, because the whole thing feels like it would cost you the very thing that makes your work worth doing. So you keep giving it away, or undercharging, or waiting to feel ready, while the gap between what you offer and what comes back to you stays open.

It’s a strange kind of stuck. From the inside, it feels like: What else am I supposed to do here, stand on my head? I’m already running flat out. And that’s the heart of it. The answer was never to run faster or do more. It isn’t a lack of talent, and it isn’t a lack of care. It’s that what you do best hasn’t yet become clear — to others, and sometimes even to you — in a form someone can recognise, trust, and move toward. The missing piece was never effort. It’s legibility.

That’s what this 90 minutes is about. Not monetising your gifts in the usual grim sense. Something closer to letting your work become legible enough that the right people get it — and value can find its way to you without you having to become someone you’re not.

And underneath all of it sits something worth saying plainly: money isn’t the problem — extraction is. Most values-led spaces leave money out of the room entirely, as if caring and earning can’t sit together — which leaves good people broke and calling it integrity. But money belongs inside a non-extractive value system, not outside it. You can be paid, paid well, paid sustainably, without extracting from anyone — including yourself. We’re going to put money back in the room, on those terms.

I’m Danu — I run Grokkist, a living learning ecology for curious, caring people following what brings them alive. For some of us — the changemakers and builders out at the wild margin of the new world — the question of how to actually make a living from it becomes pressing and personal.

That’s where the work I call groksmithing comes in: helping people name, claim and make legible what they’re genuinely brilliant at — the practical wisdom they carry but rarely think to name — so a living can take shape around their most sincere living practice without betraying it. This workshop is a taste of that. Come and see how it feels.

For people with real gifts and no wish to sell their soul to make a living from them. Bring the work that brings you alive, even if you’ve never quite known how to talk about it.
