The Three Horizons framework is a ‘fruit salad of possibility’ – an opportunity for all of us as members to shape the vision, values and ambition for ASP in a way which celebrates the rich plurality of each of our differing and distinct contributions.
It enables radical organising, transformation and, at the same time, a ‘wobbly approach’ – discussion that converges and diverges, that goes deep and wide, to allow everyone to contribute as needed.
In the first stage of the ASP Evolution process, we’ll examine the decline of ‘Business As Usual’. This is the world we hope to leave behind through the change we make as sustainability professionals; the tired old model of exploitation and inequality.
Know your enemy.
Honour the pain.
We have to start here, in this moment. Clear eyed, sleeves rolled up; reading ourselves for transformation without being naive about the challenge. More hospice nurse than midwife.
The Three Horizons Framework refers to this as Horizon 1, and poses a series of questions which we’ll explore together in this session:
- “What evidence do you see around you that the current system is under strain or even failing?”
- “What aspects of the existing system are no longer fit for purpose and need to be let go?”
- “What are the key aspects of the existing approach to retain?”
We’re not simply trying to answer these questions. We’ll think too about how we might bring our own practice and perspective to bear; what other questions are posed by these and how might we develop a deeper, more reflective response?
We’ll hold these questions open until the end of the exploration phase, early in 2026, when we’ll gather the threads and consider how they converge on a way forward for the organisation.
During this session we’ll be working together in small breakout groups of three or four, and gathering en masse to share and discuss the insights that emerge. We’ll use Zoom along with a virtual whiteboard on Miro to document our progress.
We’d love you to join us if you can, though a recording will be available afterwards, along with the whiteboard, and you’ll be welcome to contribute further responses until early 2026. Don’t worry about making it to each session – there will be plenty of opportunities to be involved with the process as it develops!

I am a regenerative business designer, bookseller and rebel economist on a journey to understand my place in the great system of life.
I specialise in the application of 3 Horizons and Doughnut Economics particularly through creating an emotional connection with this moment, to support change that comes from the heart not just the head.
