A discussion between Satish Kumar, Jagdish Rattanani and Sudarshan Iyengar.
Satish Kumar is the subject of a long form conversation book titled Satish Kumar: Abundant Love by Jagdish Rattanani with Sudarshan Iyengar and Lisa Pearson.
Our speakers will discuss the journey of the book, which was first published in the UK by Triarchy Press, a publisher focused on Systems Thinking, and later in India by Speaking Tiger books.
In the three years that the editions have been around, what have they learned about how the book has travelled and how they are using it to deliver workshops on non violence and Gandhian thinking? What is their Action Research journey related to the book? What have they learned along the way?
They have taken the book to school children in Baroda in Western India, to MBA students in Bangalore in Southern India, and now are preparing for the first time to deliver a two day workshop to senior managers at an important Foundation working on sustainability.
After initial discussions about the book, workshops, and learnings, we’ll look forward to hearing Satish reflect on the book, on the journey at the workshops, and on the way he is crafting an entirely new Schumacher Wild campus in the UK as the next logical step to Schumacher College.
We will then open up for questions to the speakers, particularly to Satish, and any further reflections.
At the start of the meeting, we’ll be encouraging everyone to reflect on what they are hearing throughout the Earth Conversation in their own way, creating a map of words, images or a combination of both. We’ll say a few words about first person action research at the start before the introductions. We encourage you to stick your map on your fridge door or somewhere in the house for the next month so that you can continue your reflections on this Earth Conversation!
About the speakers:
Satish Kumar is a renowned Indian-British activist, author, and speaker known for his lifelong commitment to peace, ecology, and social justice. In addition to his activism, Kumar has been a significant figure in ecological education. He served as the editor of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine for over four decades and co-founded Schumacher College in Devon, England, which focuses on holistic education and sustainability. His work emphasises “reverential ecology,” advocating for a deep respect for nature and the interconnectedness of all life.
Jagdish Rattanani is a journalist with over 35 years of experience in media publications, news correspondence, editing, and writing for periodicals. He is a Director of ASP.
Jagdish is the co-author of the book Satish Kumar: Abundant Love, a longform conversation with Satish Kumar. The book gives readers a chance to listen in on a conversation where his interviewers draw out his experiences, reflections and insights in much more depth than elsewhere.
Sudarshan Iyengar is a Gandhian economist, a Director of the Gandhi Research Foundation Jalgaon, and a trustee at the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram. He is the co-author of Satish Kumar: Abundant Love, and has published around 70 papers and articles and eight books.
Sudarshan researches in the areas of the commons and natural resource development and management, non-government institutions and Gandhian thought and practice.
