I am the voluntary director of The Schumacher Institute for Sustainable Systems – “a diverse network of fellows and associates dedicated to delivering innovative systems solutions to the world’s most pressing problems through research, training, events and consultancy“, in Bristol UK.
The institute is an independent fellowship organisation that promotes systems thinking and the ideas of E. F. Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful. I was one of the first directors of ASP – many years ago.
I was fortunate to be able to start the institute as it combined my passions for sustainability and systems thinking. My background in business provided experience of strategic thinking for a large international company and in conducting systems analysis of complex organisations. I have been involved in systems sciences throughout my career and I am a past president and current treasurer of the UK Systems Society.
Through the institute I have taken part in numerous projects, research and consultancy, where a systems approach was always an important ingredient. I have given many talks on system thinking – my role is to encourage others to develop their thinking in systems”.
