Join us for a enlivening hour warming up for Content Rising. In this session, we’ll be showcasing and exploring how connection (or disconnection) to place can support communities to make change happen. We’ll be asking what can organisations learn to engage more deeply with these communities.
Co-hosted by Louisa Dean from Naturesave Trust, Gwyn Jones from The Association of Sustainability Practitioners and Charlie Peverett from Wilsome LLP.
We will hear from:
- Polly Kitson – Head of Wilder Communities at Sussex Wildlife Trust
- Deana Bamford – Community Animator and Connector at Coalville CAN
- Carolyn Doyley – Greening and Renewal Lead at East Marsh United
Why?
As green communicators and creatives, we know that our communities hold the key to many (if not all!) of the solutions to responding to the climate and nature emergencies.
From community energy schemes, to food growing and clothes swapping projects, to regenerating local green spaces and wildlife, our communities are where we grow connection and remember that we’re all in this together.
But how important is our connection with place in this picture?
Why do so many of us feel disconnected from our outdoor, public and green spaces?
How can we welcome newcomers to “our” places?
What does that kind of connection offer us all if we tend to a little more closely?
We will hear practitioners for different types of community organisation to share what they’ve learned about the power of place in community responses to the challenges of our times.
Deana Bamford is one of the core team at Coalville C.A.N, a Leicestershire group that epitomises positive community action and enterprise. Polly Kitson from Sussex Wildlife Trust leads work to support nature connection based in neighbourhoods, and will be sharing some of the highlights and lessons learnt through working in communities along the Sussex coast. We will also hear from Carolyn Doyley at East Marsh United, a groundbreaking Grimsby project that shows what can happen when people take radical action to sort out the most fundamental issues in their neighbourhoods, from affordable housing, to local employment, to creating liveable streets.
And we’ll invite everyone who joins the session to reflect and share on their own experiences and perspectives. Let’s see what kind of place we can get to in 60 minutes of rich conversation.
