“Is that event you’re planning or attending really worth it? Your time, money, and in particular, the environmental cost?“
It’s a question I’ve been asking for many years in my work as an event sustainability teacher, researcher and consultant.
I’ve had the privilege of exploring the question and experimenting with solutions using multiple lenses, from waste audits and carbon assessments to social impact programs, experience design and environmental management systems for events.
And while the earlier part of my career involved working on global event projects for major companies, associations and institutions, the latter half is different by choice. Shifting in focus to more deeply consider how the act of gathering and community can support the slow and difficult process of change, and how convening can be reoriented to inspire and support this essential aim.
