“I have grown to realise we live in an interconnected world where almost everything has a relationship with and influence on everything else. A failure to notice these relationships and their impact can cause suffering.”
I have 24 years experience drawn from the British Army and multinational business in a variety of international operational leadership roles. I hold an MSc in Sustainability & Responsibility, am a facilitator and coach, bush-craft practitioner, qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and wilderness first-aider, and participated in a number of wilderness expeditions taking me to Africa, South America and the North Pole.
From my experience I have grown to realise we live in an interconnected world where almost everything has a relationship with and influence on everything else. A failure to notice these relationships and their impact can cause suffering. For myself, in times of stress and anxiety I have certainly seen the impact on my sense of wellbeing or isolation, this resulted in not having the ‘mojo’ that puts a spring in my step through to near paralysis in fear and despair for our future… and I have noticed this in others too. One of the bigger causes for this in the eco-anxiety in the face of the climate emergency, and so my of my work revolves on building nature connection, resilience and working with clients to move from paralysis to intervention.
My work aims to help clients ‘come back to life’ (borrowing from Joanna Macy). The approach broadly follows three steps:
Connect – Pay attention to our relationships. The relationship with ourself, family, colleagues and communities, and into the broader natural world. Understanding of these interactions provides insight into what is important to us and where we can focus our attention.
Empower – To harness the awareness of our connections, step into our personal leadership, and explore the options and responses available to us.
Act – Empowered, to embark on a journey to create strategies and action that build resilience, direction and passion into our life and work.
Integral to my approach is action learning, with a light-hearted, playful approach, I encourage clients to experiment, try things out, see what happens, to pay attention, learn and adapt. I believe that powerful responses to the uncertain challenges we face are based on harnessing the collective wisdom from all that we are as individuals and as a community, as such I am looking forward to collaborating with this community, our future conversations and action together.
