Helen Wadham

Animals are more than species and biodiversity.
They are individuals who share the earth with us, shaping our societies and communities.
We owe it to animals and to ourselves to welcome them into our conversations about sustainability.

I’m Helen, a social anthropologist based at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School.

My research and teaching centres on collaboration across species, generations and communities. I’m especially interested in the way that animals help shape our understanding and experience of sustainability. Current projects include studies of animal work, Mexican rodeo, and retired racehorses. I also write about off-grid living, and critical/alternative approaches to sustainability.

Prior to becoming an academic, I worked in the voluntary sector in the UK and Latin America. I would be very happy to have a chat with any members who might be thinking about doing something similar i.e. pursuing a PhD later in life – or indeed at any time!
