ASP – Association of Sustainability Practitioners

Action Research: Reflective Practice “The Fox and the Hedgehog”. 4th June, 14:30

Reflective practice is a critical component of Action Research—as a First Person process of individual reflection, a Second Person collaborative action, or a more public Third Person process in which the results of the reflective practice are shared with a broader audience.

In this presentation David Coghlan and Mary Brydon-Miller are joined by visual facilitator, Steve Kroeger, for a discussion that builds off of the old saying: “The fox knows many things, the hedgehog knows one big thing

— in this case with Mary taking the role of the fox and David the role of the hedgehog. Steve will be capturing the dialogue between the fox and the hedgehog through drawings, as well as illustrating reflections from participant discussions.

And we invite participants to consider with us the ways in which reflective practice can deepen their own work around sustainability. There will be opportunity for individual reflective practice and group discussion, looking at how our invidual commitments to sustainability contribute to organizational action.

Mary Brydon-Miller, Ph.D. is Professor in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville in the US and is currently serving as Extra-ordinary Professor at North-West University in South Africa and adjunct faculty at the University of Technology, Sydney.
